Winner of the student essay competition

ROME – The Fort Stanwix Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently held an awards ceremony to recognize the winners of its American History Essay Contest and Flag Essay Contest.

Winners were invited to present their essays on “The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” or “What the Flag Means to Me” in front of a gathering of parents, teachers, friends and DAR representatives.

The event took place on Saturday, April 30th at First Presbyterian Church, 108 W. Court St. The winners included:

American History Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

First Place – Krislyn LaGasse, Class 6, John D. George Elementary School (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School District) and Edie Arthur, Class 5, Stokes Elementary School (Rome City School District).

Flag Essay Awards What the flag means to me

First Place – Zoey Vollmer, Grade 5, Westmoreland Upper Elementary School (Westmoreland Central School District);

Second Place – Amineh Shehadeh, Grade 6, John E. Joy Elementary School (Rome);

Third Place – Bruce Banner Barnes, Class 5, Westmoreland Upper Elementary School (Westmoreland);

Honorable Mention — Eli Correa, Grade 6, Louis V. Denti Elementary School (Rome); Miles Misiaszek, Class 5, Westmoreland Upper Elementary School (Westmoreland); Eliza Taylor, Grade 5, John D. George Elementary School (VVS); and Kali Zydzik, Class 5 John D. George Elementary School (VVS).
