Sunday June 9th is a day we won’t soon forget in the Tuley’s Takes home office, even though we spent the whole day from home doing Circa sports betting when we put our reporter’s hat (actually a Cubs Hat) and covered the last day of the Circa Survivor and Circa Sports Million competitions.
It was exciting to see 6 millionaires (at least before taxes!) Line up.
When I put on my handicap hat (actually the same hat) it was also a banner day, as my NFL best bets are published in Point Spread Weekly and here in these daily columns for the last few days on the Jaguars, Lions, Texans, Falcons The Steelers, 49ers and Raiders went 6-1 ATS with 5 total surprises (I wish I had equalized these !!!) and the Texans covered their loss to the Titans. The only defeat there was the Falcons + 4 to the Saints, but I didn’t mind losing this game as I am the Circa Sports Million proxy for DURBIFY (aka Tony Gordon from California) with whom I watched the games got down on Sunday when he won first place for $ 1 million, thanks in part to his choice of Saints -3.5 in the competition. It was worth sacrificing this game for the common good.
As usual, let’s round up betting in the NFL (including the Contest Corner about the winners of the major soccer competitions in Vegas), NBA, NHL and CBB and then offer the CFB Playoff National Championship Game on Monday evening.
Summaries from Sunday
NFL: Raiders beat Chargers 35-32 in OT to complete the NFL regular season and grab the final wildcard spot. The Raiders won as a 3-point home underdog and +143 on the money line, although many people were hoping (and betting on) the game would end in a draw so both teams could qualify for the playoffs. We thought we were going to watch a soccer game where both teams are playing for a tie to get out of the pool game. However, faves and dogs shared 7-7 SU that day, but dogs ran 9-5 ATS. Home teams were 8-6 SU and ATS, while overs went 9-5.
More NFL: The 7 total surprises on Sunday were the Jaguars (+ 14 vs. Colts), Dolphins (+ 6 vs. Patriots), Lions (+ 4 vs. Packers), Steelers (+ 3 at Ravens), Seahawks (+ 5.5 at Cardinals), 49ers (+ 3 at LAR) and Raiders (+ 3 vs. Chargers). Including Saturday Week 18 favorites were 9-7 SU, but dogs led 10-6 ATS. Home teams went 8-8 SU and 9-7 ATS, while overs dominated with 11-5.
NFL Regular Season Wrap: Faves finished 167-99-1 with 5 pick’ems, but dogs finished 139-125-3 ATS (52.7 percent). Home teams led 136-132-1 with 3 neutral site games (Packers-Saints in week 1 plus 2 London games), but road teams led 140-126-3 ATS (52.6 percent). Unders led 146-124-2 (54.1 percent with primetime Unders 29-24-1 after starting 1-8).
NBA: Faves went 7-3 SU, but dogs led 7-3 ATS, as Magic (+ 7 vs. Wizards), Pelicans (+ 7 with Raptors), Thunder (+ 7 vs. Nuggets) and Spurs (+ 9.5 with Nets ) all were covered as dogs in SU losses. The surprises were the Clippers (+ 4 vs. Hawks), Grizzlies (+ 3 at Lakers) and Blazers (+ 1.5 vs. Kings). Under went 7-3.
CBB: No. 13 Ohio State beat Northwestern 95-87, making late free throws to narrowly cover as a 7.5-point home favorite. No. 23 Wisconsin defeated Maryland 70-69 after losing nearly 21 points, but it was actually a surprise when the Badgers finished as a 1-point road loser.
NHL: Faves went 2-0 as the Blues (-150 in a 2-1 home win against Stars) and Ducks (-130 in a 4-3 home win against the Red Wings) both won as home chalk. Over / Unders split as Stars Blues stayed under 6 goals and Red Wings Ducks went over 5.5.
The last 5 Circa Survivors all won NFL Week 18, raking in $ 1.2 million each from the $ 6 million guaranteed pool. I wrote a full story about it on VSiN.com so just let me direct you there.
DURBIFY (aka Tony Gordon, 45, of Atascadero, Calif.) Won 1st percent on Circa Sports Million) with its top listing to bypass HANNIBAL BARCA, who was ranked with its top 2 listings last week 1 and 3 but used the same moves on both and went 2-3 to allow DURBIFY, who was half a point behind starting week 18, to claim the title. DURBIFY’s second entry – where he went against his top games to maximize his chance of both of his entries finishing high – nonetheless ended in a tie in 10th place.
More on Circa Sports Million: Mad Russian went 5-0 to hit DURBIFY’s record of 63:27, but after the first tiebreaker of most wins of the season (both had 63 as neither pushed all season) is the next tiebreaker was the number of winning weeks during the 18-week contest and Durbify won the 17:14 after losing just one week during the season). Mad Russian raises $ 325,000 for 2nd. HANNIBAL BARCA settled for 3rd place with $ 275,000.
The Westgate SuperContest was also won in the tiebreaker when SPORTSHANDICAPPER took the LITOFSKY CLAN with 62 points, but SPORTSHANDICAPPER (62-28, 68.9 percent) had a 12-3 record in the last 3 weeks of the season and won the top prize of 335,800 USD, while LITOFSKY CLAN (61-27-2, 69.3 percent) were 11: 4 behind and content themselves with 100,740 US dollars in second place.
Take from Monday
Alabama-Georgia Below 52.5: I hope my regular readers check out our tips in Point Spread Weekly every Wednesday too. If you do this you have likely seen that I used Alabama + 3 and Under 52.5 on the VSiN CFB consensus page and then Under 52.5 on the VSiN CFB Best Bet page. You probably also noticed that I didn’t write a report in my regular Tuley’s Takes column or in the Best Bets file on VSiN.com later that week. That’s because it’s a very lukewarm opinion that I didn’t feel strong enough to write about as the “best bet” as the stats for both teams actually say it should go over that number, but it is more of a gut feeling that this game is getting tighter after the previously highly touted Georgia defense was embarrassed in the SEC championship game. But hey, since I’m sitting here late on Sunday evening, I can’t imagine I won’t be making a bet on Monday night’s game, best bet for Monday. (Also, that one NHL 1st-Period Over game I was considering at Kraken-Avalanche looks like it’s going to be over 2 goals, so I don’t like that game that much).
