Tied some community competitions in northwest Iowa | Local news

The old saying “Every vote counts” was especially true in several local elections in northwest Iowa on November 2nd.

In the small town of Arthur, Ida County, only two candidates – Kristy Abegast and Paula Fried – submitted nomination papers for the three vacant seats on the city council.

Seven residents each received 1 write-in vote for third place. To break the tie, each name was written on a piece of paper and the district officials drew the lot. Susan Knop was declared the winner after her name was first drawn. Under state law, she had 10 days from the date of the November 9th vote to accept or decline the office.

In the small town of Truesdale, Buena Vista County, two candidates – Kevin King and Melinda Bavero – each received 3 votes for a seat on the city council. The tie was torn after King’s name was pulled out of a hat.

In another area race, a single vote separated the two candidates with the most registered votes for Granville Mayor’s office. Karl Kellen was elected mayor of the small Sioux County town, alongside Dennis Friedmann, 14-13.

The mayor and all five city council seats in the small towns of Gillett Grove and Rossie, Clay County, stood for election on November 2nd. But none of the cities had names on the ballot.
