Veterans of Foreign Wars has announced the starting shot for the “Voice of Democracy” and “Patriot’s Pen” scholarship competitions for 2021-2022.

The essay competitions are designed to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the United States and promote patriotism among the youth of the country. Students are asked to submit an essay in response to a question or topic that prompts them to reflect on how American history and democratic ideals and principles apply in their lives.

This year’s Voice of Democracy theme invites students to reflect on “America: Where Are We Going From Here?” It is an audio essay competition open to students in grades 9 through 12. The national winner will receive the $ 30,000 TC Seiman Memorial Scholarship Award. Further information and application forms can be found at https://tinyurl.com/VFWVOD.

The Patriot’s Pen competition is open to students in grades six through eight. This year, students will be asked to ponder, “How can I be a good American?” The national winner will receive a US $ 5,000 prize. Further information and application forms can be found at https://tinyurl.com/VFWPEN.

Students are encouraged to post or drop their entries by October 31st at VFW Post 2535, 112 Caledonia St., Lockport, NY 14094, under the care of Stephanie Thurston.
