Opportunity for a photo contest to make rural America shine | David Bergmeier

The best photos tell a story and compel us to see the beautiful in everyday life. The High Plains Journal 2023 Down Country Roads Calendar Contest is now open.

Readers can submit digital photos that reflect the beauty of rural America—crops, landscapes, livestock, farming families, and more. In previous calendar competitions, the many photographs shed new light on what makes our part of the country special for residents and guests. The landscape provides a canvas suitable for believing that no two images (or occasions) are the same. If you ask the photographers who take stunning pictures, they will often say, “It came on a day that started out like a routine, but I was so thankful that I had my camera or iPhone with me and was able to capture the moment.” “

These artistic touches help escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, can inspire smiles and strengthen our sense of optimism, and contribute to our appreciation of the many blessings that God offers to rural America. We shouldn’t take either of these things for granted.

The calendar competition shines a light on the creativity of High Plains residents who see the moment in mind. Our urban cousins have the excitement of the city, but the hustle is no match for the calm that reigns where farmers and ranchers continue to go about their jobs to feed the world and offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in rural areas .

Calendar competition 2023

Submit photos for the 2023 calendar competition here.

We are proud of our 12-state High Plains region, which offers scenic landscapes and, above all, people who are unpretentious and care about their families, neighbors and the stewardship of the country. We should all take more time to brag, but let’s face it, that’s just not our style; However, this is where the Down Country Roads Calendar Contest can help “talk” for us and show America what we are about.

We really appreciate these submissions because they also help us better appreciate the High Plains region.

For the competition, we are looking for high-resolution digital photos in landscape (horizontal) orientation, not portrait (vertical) orientation or square. (If taking a picture with your phone, turn it sideways first.) We’d love to see scenes that capture the beauty of country life in all seasons.
