Moment with a manager: Julie Rutter | Appalachian Highlands

Surname: Julie Rutter

Age: 50

Training: After high school, studied police administration and security management at the University of South Africa.

Title: Director of Security

Company: Hard Rock International

How are you? Work with my team to ensure the safety of guests and assets at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Bristol.

What do you think are the keys to success? Passion, dedication and commitment not only to your job but also to your team as a whole. When your team cares about every individual you meet, when they feel loved and valued, they will want to share your vision and want to help make your business a huge success.

Name some of your most important achievements: I have onboarded several team members and helped them progress from entry level to leadership positions. I have managed world class events at the Montecasino, South Africa and from a security perspective I was instrumental in the planning and successful opening of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and the Casino Tampa expansion which now features Elvis’ magnificent golden piano at the entrance to the casino.

Who were your mentors? Wherever I go, I’ve been inspired by passionate people. In South Africa it was the man who recruited me into the casino business, a South African police veteran, Andre Hudson. When I came to the US, it was my Vice President and Director of Security (Steve Karaisz and Kyle Himpler) at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Tampa.

Can you name a turning point in your career? When I changed my life path and left South Africa for the United States. I came to this beautiful country not knowing what to expect. I was Deputy Security Manager for 20 years and in the absence of a Security Manager headed a wonderful, efficient security team at Montecasino, Johannesburg, South Africa and at Tsogo Sun. When I got to the US I had to start again at entry level, it was tough but it was worth it. I’ve grown and progressed through the ranks from security officer to security director, and this promotion would be my fifth in three years and five months.

Who are your family members? My amazing wife Robyn; my mother, Jeannette; brother, Mark and his family in South Africa; and sister, Jeanine and her family in Australia.

What management books would you recommend? Books by Robin Sharma.

Do you read national business publications? Unfortunately not.

Any advice you would give to an aspiring leader? Stay passionate and invested in what you do and strive to inspire your team – always. Never give up and remember we can always do better.

Is there anything else you would like to add? I am truly honored to be a part of the American workforce and I will ensure that I add value not only to my organization but also to the lives of the team that I am fortunate enough to be a part of.
