Men’s basketball seeks third straight win at IUPUI Thursday

Set the stage
• The Youngstown State men’s basketball team kicks off a short two-game road trip Thursday, February 3 when it visits IUPUI. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis, Indiana. The match broadcast is available on the ESPN+/570 WKBN /iHeartRadio app.
• The Penguins (12-10, 6-6 Horizon League), seeking their third straight win, clinched an 86-72 win over Milwaukee on Jan. 29.
• Senior Michael Akuchie posted a career-high 33 points with a career-best six 3-pointers to lead the Penguins. Sophomore William Dunn scored 19 points while junior Dwayne Cohill had 16 and sophomore Myles Hunter added 12 points.
• IUPUI (2-17, 0-8 Horizon League) is without a Division I win this season and comes on Jan. 31 with a 75-59 win over East-West University. BJ Maxwell leads the Jaguars with 10.9 points of play.
• Junior Dwayne Cohill, who has averaged 14.4 points per game in his last 16 competitions, has hit double digits in his last eight games, including a career-high 25 against Wright State on Jan. 15 and 20 against Cleveland State on Jan. 14 . 21
• Senior Michael Akuchie became the 41st player in school history to have 1,000 career points after scoring 12 points against Northern Kentucky on Jan. 13 and has 1,088 points. Akuchie also became only the third YSU Division I player to accumulate 700 career boards and has 735.
• This is the 18th meeting between Youngstown State and IUPUI in a series that began in 1975. The Penguins have a 15-2 lead in the all-time series.
• The Penguins visit UIC on Saturday 5 February. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET at Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago, Illinois.

About IUPUI

IUPUI enters the game with a 2-17 overall record and a 0-8 mark in the Horizon League.

The Jaguars clinched a 75-59 win over East-West University but don’t have a Division I win this season.

BJ Maxwell leads the Jaguars, who are averaging 51.6 points per game, with 10.9 points per contest.

The IUPUI series

This is the 18th meeting between Youngstown State and IUPUI in a row dating back to 1975.

The Penguins have a 15-2 lead in the all-time series and are 6-0 in games at Indianapolis and 2-0 in games at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

Senior Michael Akuchie posted a career-high 33 points in 10-of-17 shooting and hit a career-best six 3-pointers to lead the Penguins to an 86-72 win over Milwaukee and on Jan. 29.

The Penguins posted a season-high 13 3-pointers against the Panthers.

Akuchie named HL POW

Youngstown State men’s basketball senior Michael Akuchie has been named Nike Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Jan. 31.
This is the first weekly award of Akuchie’s career and the Penguins’ second award this season. Junior Dwayne Cohill received the honor on December 13, 2021.

Akuchie led the Penguins to a 2-0 week last week with wins over Green Bay and Milwaukee. He scored 46 points with 15 rebounds for an average of 23 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
He also shot 61.5 percent from field, 54.5 percent from 3-point range, and 80 percent from the free throw line.

Akuchie posted a career-high 33 points in 10-of-16 shooting and hit a career-best six 3-pointers to lead the Penguins to an 86-72 win over Milwaukee. He also went 7-for-8 off the line with eight rebounds against the Panthers.

In YSU’s 63-50 win over Green Bay, Akuchie scored 13 points with seven rebounds and caught 6 of 9 shots from the floor.

His 33 points is the most by a Penguins player in a game since Darius Quisenberry had 41 against Wright State on February 20, 2020.

Almost perfectly thin

Sophomore William Dunn has taken a tear off the field in the last three games.

In that span, Dunn has made 19 of 23 shots from the field and scored 50 points.

At one point, he made 12 direct field goal attempts.

He scored 19 points with three 3-pointers against Milwaukee on Jan. 29.

Dunn scored a game-high 20 points with 8/8 in the 82-71 loss at Purdue Fort Wayne on Jan. 23.

He became the third player in YSU Division I to shoot 100 percent from the field with at least seven field goals scored.

The last YSU player to accomplish this feat was TeJay Anderson, who won 9-on-9 against Southern Utah on January 13, 2001.

In his last eight games played, Dunn has shot 77.8 percent (28 to 36) from the field.

Guins in February

For the past three seasons, Youngstown State has shown some of its best basketball games in the month of February.

The Penguins have amassed a 17-6 record over the past three seasons in February:

2020-21: 7-1

2019-20: 5-3

2018-19: 5-2

The Penguins had a season-high 13 3-pointers in their 86-72 win over Milwaukee on January 29 and 12 3-pointers in their 82-71 loss to Purdue Fort Wayne on January 23.

It was the fifth and sixth time this season that the Penguins have made at least 10 3s in a game.

Youngstown State, which averages 7.9 3-pointers per game, has totaled 65 in their last seven games for an average of 9.3 per game.

Cohill Double Digit Streakin’

Junior Dwayne Cohill has scored at least 10 points in each of the last eight games.

He scored 16 against Milwaukee on January 29 and has 136 points for an average of 17.0 points per game over that span.

In the last 16 games, Cohill has averaged 14.4 points.

Sweet charity

Youngstown State is having an impressive season at the free throw line with a .752 team free throw percentage.

Seven players shoot better than 75 percent and Senior Michael Akuchie leads the team with 84.4 percent.
Akuchie is third in the Horizon League while junior Dwayne Cohill is fifth in the league with 82.3 percent.

Youngstown State makes 79.9 percent of its charity rolls in league games.

YSU has won four games away, with two of the wins coming by more than 18 points. The Guins’ two road losses occurred in Penn State and in West Virginia.

After losing to Penn State in their opener, YSU defeated Southeast Missouri 97-79 and had league wins in Milwaukee (72-70) and Green Bay (82-58) before falling at WVU on December 22. The Penguins also managed a 64-60 road league win at Robert Morris.

Rathan-Mayes reaches career peak

Rathan-Mayes had a career-high 21 points with 7-of-9 shots from the field, including three 3-point shots.

The January 9 game marked the first time in his career that Rathan-Mayes scored at least 20 points in a game.

70 points the key

The Penguins are 9-3 this year if they score 70 or more points. On seven occasions, YSU has 80+ points in wins against Defiance (96), SEMO (87), Milwuakee (86), Central Michigan (84), Green Bay (82), Westminster (81), and Wright State (90). Youngstown State had 70 in a win in Milwaukee, 71 in a win against Canisius, and 79 in a win against St. Thomas, Minn. The Penguins scored 72 points in a Jan. 1 loss in Oakland. The Penguins scored 80 points in an overtime loss to Cleveland State on January 9 and 71 points in a loss to Purdue Fort Wayne on January 23.

Akuchie reaches 1,000

Senior Michael Akuchie became the 41st player in school history to have 1,000 career points after scoring 12 points against Northern Kentucky on January 13. He now has 1,088 career points.

He is averaging a career-high 13.7 pregame points.

The fifth-grader has hit double digits in 18 of 22 games this year. He had a career-high 33 points and eight rebounds on Jan. 27 against Milwaukee.

Olison shows shot on goal

Tevin Olison has been an offensive spark for the Penguins this season. He is second on the team with 269 points from 22 games.

Olison has scored 20 or more points three times so far. He had a season-high 27 at SEMO while adding 21 against Central Michigan and 20 at Green Bay.

He hit a career-high five 3-pointers for 17 points in a loss to Purdue Fort Wayne on Jan. 23.

His goalscoring prowess has been on display for the past two seasons at Tennessee’s College of Cumberlands. In two years he had 33 20-point appearances.

Calhoun in season five

Jerrod Calhoun owns a career record of 189-119 and a 65-81 mark in his fifth season with the program. He ranks third in school history for wins by a head coach at YSU.

As of January 31, 2019, the Penguins hold a record of 51-41 for a .549 win ratio.
YSU has finished over .500 in each of the last two seasons.

Akuchie Mr. Rebound

Senior Michael Akuchie averages 7.2 rebounds per game, ranking sixth in the Horizon League.

Akuchie has 735 career rebounds, becoming the third YSU Division I player to have 700 career rebounds.

He is one of three YSU Division I players to have scored at least 1,000 points with 700 boards.
