The Saints opened as a 4-point favorite in a game with a total of 40 points. There has been no line movement yet, although bettors are on the guests’ side. In total, 86% of the bets against the spread and the money line are placed on the Jaguars.

Lawrence versus Minshew

Maybe Urban Meyer doesn’t want Trevor Lawrence as a generation talent to get involved in his own hype.

For the second straight week, the head coach has not named a starter for the game and said during the week that he still doesn’t know who his starting point will be in Week 1.

Lawrence looked good in his debut in limited work, a 23-13 week 1 preseason loss to the Cleveland Browns. After being crushed on his very first pass attempt, the Clemson standout looked fine.

He was 6 out of 9 for 71 yards with no TDs or interceptions, his best pass was a 35 yard strike to Marvin Jones Jr.

Last season’s starter and fan favorite, Gardner Minshew, challenges the rookie. Minshew was 4-for-8 for 48 yards and an interception against the Browns. The second year professional has a career record of 1-8 as a starter.

It is clear that Meyer wants offensive pop. His biggest concern after the first half against the Browns was the offense, which produced a pathetic 85 yards. If both of them can maintain a good offensive flow, you’d guess they’ve got a head start on the competition – if you think Meyer is actually considering not starting Lawrence.

Winston versus Hill

Life after Drew Brees didn’t look as promising for the Saints after a 17-14 loss in Baltimore.

Head coach Sean Payton didn’t even go into the starting situation of the quarterback, but was more angry that his team had made six ball losses and looked completely upset in the defeat.

Jameis Winston was named a starter in Week 2, though expect the same number of reps for Taysom Hill.

Winston sat for most of the last year but showed a few lightning bolts when called. But can he reduce sales? He is only one season away from pitching a historic 30 TD, 30 INT season with the Tampa Bay Bucs in 2019.

Against Baltimore, he was 7-for-12 for 96 yards, throwing a touchdown and a pick.

Hill fared not much better, going 8-on-12 for 81 yards with an interception of his own.

Hill got the call last year when Brees went down with a rib injury. In those four starts from Weeks 11-14, he went 82 for 114, threw for 834 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also ran for four points.

Other battles to watch

Behind DJ Chark, Jones and Laviska Shenault Jr. there is also a traffic jam around a receiver spot. Assuming Jamal Agnew takes on the role of returner / receiver, there will be a trio of past first-round picks – Phillip Dorsett II, Laquon Treadwell, and Tavon Austin – at the head of the competition.

For the Saints, rookie Tony Jones Jr. made an impressive debut against Baltimore. Despite having a fumble, the Notre Dame product rushed 82 yards on seven totes, including an 18 yard TD run. He also had five catches for 38 yards and looked competent at pass protection.

He is probably already in third place ahead of veteran Devonta Freeman and could work in lockstep with Latavius Murray behind Alvin Kamara.

Best bid

Payton hinted that if this happened, his defensive starters would have little to no time. With very little depth on this side of the ball, New Orleans just wants to get them healthy into the regular season.

That should allow Lawrence and Minshew to come up with some points and get them on the board.

All week, Meyer and Lawrence talked about the importance of winning, even if it was preseason. This is a team that has lost 15 games in a row in the regular season and a total of 16 games in a row. Getting a W clearly means more to Jacksonville than to the veteran-laden Saints. That should be enough to beat them in this case.

Selection: Jaguars +4 (-110)
