Timeline for sports betting legalization in Illinois

The Illinois General Assembly passed a sports betting law in 2019, opening the door for legal sports betting to start in 2020.

Online-only licenses were allowed in the state beginning in 2021. However, Illinois had an in-person registration requirement until March 2022. All sports bettors had to travel to the partner casino of the app they wish to use to complete their registrations.

BetRivers was the first sportsbook to launch in the state and several others have followed since opening in 2020.

In the state of Illinois, sports betting is taxed at 15% of gross gaming revenue. Enterprise online-only licenses require a $20 million fee. However, all of the sportsbooks have also partnered with a casino in Illinois.

PointsBet sports betting app

The interface for PointsBet is really fast, which is always great for bettors who want to quickly place a bet before a game. It is also available for iPhone and Android and also has dark mode. PointsBet isn’t as data-dense, but it’s still a solid app to use.

Grade: A-

BetRivers sports betting app

BetRivers has a solid bet slip feature, and it’s also easy to withdraw your money from BetRivers, which is of course important. BetRivers also offers slightly fewer promos than some of its competitors. It is also available for iPhone and Android.

Grade: B+

All of these apps are great options and I would recommend taking advantage of several of their different promo options and trying them out to see which app best suits your needs and what you want when betting on sports. Everyone has different preferences, so there’s no harm in trying several.

The biggest quirk with sports betting in Illinois was the in-person registration requirement until it was lifted in March 2022.

Well, the biggest quirk might be that bettors can only bet on college state teams if they place the bet in person.

Indiana and Iowa are neighboring states where sports betting is legal, but Missouri, another neighboring state, has yet to go live with legal sports betting.

Now that personal registration is in place, Illinois can allow bettors to register with several different sportsbooks.

The market will continue to mature as more operators join the state, but the online-only fee will make it difficult for books that don’t partner with a casino.
