For the first time ever, Akhilesh Yadav will be running for MLA, sources say

UP Election 2022: Akhilesh Yadav is the MP of Lok Sabha from Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi:

After much hesitation, Akhilesh Yadav has decided to take part in the elections in Uttar Pradesh, it was said today. He had previously said he would not be contesting the election, preferring to focus on every seat in the state.

Akhilesh Yadav is the Lok Sabha MP from Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh and has never voted in a state election. His seat has not yet been decided, sources say.

Sources said the pressure was on the Samajwadi party leader and former prime minister after the BJP’s Yogi Adityanath, the acting prime minister of Uttar Pradesh, decided to contest state elections for the first time.

Yogi Adityanath will compete from Gorakhpur Sadar in East UP and the BJP sees big gains in this region by fielding the priest-politician who is the head of the influential Gorakhpur Mutt.

Sources say Akhilesh Yadav could pick a seat from either the eastern UP or a central constituency like top-flight Lucknow. Applying for more than one seat is also on the table.

Reports of Akhilesh Yadav contesting the election come on a day when his sister-in-law, Aparna Yadav, was tipped to join the BJP in Delhi, which is going in the opposite direction after several key backward caste leaders from the BJP recently joined the Samajwadi party had changed.

In November, Akhilesh Yadav told reporters he would not contest the election. But his party rushed to clarify that such a decision has yet to be made by the party.

“I will not stand for parliamentary elections myself,” the Samajwadi MP was quoted as saying by the PTI news agency.

Leading the Samajwadi party to a major victory in the UP in 2012, he became the country’s youngest prime minister at the age of 38. At that time he was a Lok Sabha MP from Kannauj.

He later took the path of the State Legislative Council. His wife, Dimple Yadav, was unopposed from the Kannauj seat he had vacated.
