American Legion Post 202 of Newtown will be holding a speech contest at Newtown High School and all ninth through twelfth graders are eligible to enter.

This is the third year that American Legion Post 202 is holding the competition, which will take place on Thursday, January 27 at 5:00 p.m.

There are cash prizes at all levels of competition: Postal, District, State and National. According to the local postal results, the district competition will be held on Saturday, February 19th.

Seven Connecticut County winners will compete for the state title on March 5. Connecticut State winners will receive the following cash prizes: $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third through seventh place.

More information about the contest is available online at legion.org/oratorical.

Students who wish to improve their presentation skills in a nationally recognized competition would be well served with this competition. Students interested in a career in business, US government, law, the military or any other profession should enter this competition as it enjoys remarkable prestige.

The Connecticut state champion will compete at the national level in Indianapolis in the spring. Scholarships are awarded at the federal level. The prize for first place is $25,000.

Typically, this competition is open to students who live near their local post office. This year, however, it’s open to all high school students, regardless of their hometown or school.

This competition has been advertised school-wide since December.

Students and parents can email [email protected], call 203-577-9568 or email Christine Calabrese at [email protected] to enter.
