2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar Group D odds, betting preview | sports betting

This group is best viewed in stages: reigning world champions France and rivals Denmark at the top, outsiders Tunisia and Australia at the bottom. It would be a huge surprise if either of the latter two progressed through the group stage and the odds reflect that. It is more uncertain whether the Danes or Les Bleus will win the group and thus have a better chance of avoiding Argentina in the round of 16. Of course, France, as the last defending champions, failed from the group stage, so anything is possible…

Odds of winning group: France -200, Denmark +200, Australia +2000, Tunisia +2000

Opportunities for advancement: France -1600, Denmark -333, Australia +400, Tunisia +400

Group Quotas: -200

Odds Quarterfinals: -187

Championship Chances: +750

Expected top scorer: Kylian Mbappe (+800 for Golden Shoe)

Our opinion: No team in the tournament had more powerful attacking options than Les Bleus, who showed their skills at the World Cup in Russia four years ago. But mounting injuries – N’Golo Kante, Paul Pogba, Christopher Nkunku and most recently Real Madrid star Karim Benzema – are a cause for concern. France still have -1200 to get out of the group so maybe the new line-up can last until the start of the knockout game.

Group Quotas: +200

Odds Quarterfinals: +200

Championship Chances: +2800

Expected top scorer: Kasper Dolberg (+10000 for Golden Shoe)

Our opinion: Here’s a team that tends to be better than the sum of its parts, and the parts are pretty good: Dolberg is the goalscorer, but midfield is also adept at maintaining possession and thwarting opposition chances – the Danes let just three goals in 10 qualifiers. They’re also one of the tournament’s sentimental favorites; Midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest and nearly died during last year’s Euros, but he’s back and ready to start.

Group Quotas: +2000

Odds Quarterfinals: +1200

Championship Chances: +30000

Expected top scorer: Wahbi Khazri (+25000 for Golden Shoe)

Our opinion: While Tunisia are far behind the top two teams in this group on paper, the Eagles of Carthage clinched their second World Cup win four years ago and do not appear to be weak. Khazri was born in France so there will be a lot of motivation in this match. Tunisia also held Qatar 5-1-1 in the run-up, beating fellow cupmates Japan and Iran.

Group Quotas: +2000

Odds Quarterfinals: +1400

Championship Chances: +40000

Expected top scorer: Jamie MacLaren (seven goals in qualifying)

Our opinion: The much less announced injury news in Group D over the weekend was that Australia would be without Martin Boyle, a Scottish Premier League player who scored three goals in the Socceroos’ World Cup qualifier. The Australians lack the depth and firepower of France to undo that kind of loss so easily, so defensively they need to be organized and hope to get results.
