  • Tony Finau is the +2200 favorite over Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im to top the leaderboard after day one
  • Check out the best bets and odds to become the first round leader of the 3M Open in the article below

The third-to-last event of the regular season on the PGA Tour calendar heads to Minnesota for the fourth-ever edition of the 3M Open. The field is not particularly strong, with Tony Finau the favorite to snatch the trophy against Sungjae Im. Finau, Im and Hideki Matsuyama are the only three golfers in the top 25 in the world rankings to serve.

With that in mind, there are plenty of opportunities for sleepers and longshots to make some noise at this event in TPC Twin Cities. The previous three champions made this their first (Matthew Wolff), second (Michael Thompson), and third (Cameron Champ) titles on the PGA Tour.

In this article, we examine which players have the best chance of taking the lead after day one and which players got off to a quick start on Thursday this season.

Odds as of July 19th at DraftKings Sportsbook.

The weather forecast calls for mostly sunny weather throughout the day. Temperatures top out at 70 degrees for those who serve first, approaching 80 degrees by midday and a high 80 degrees for those finishing their laps in the early evening. Wind gusts will be fairly similar between 14 and 20 mph throughout Thursday.

One benefit to those who serve in the mornings is exactly the same as every week – fewer bumpy greens with fewer players chewing them up.

Adam Long plays solid golf

Adam Long (12:55 tee time) has been playing quietly strong golf lately and has had three consecutive top-25 finishes, including a T-13 in his most recent start at the John Deere Classic. In those last twelve rounds, Long ranked fifth in strokes won: putting and short game and ninth in strokes won.

Of those competing this week, Long has the sixth-best points average in the opening round of the PGA Tour.

Long has had success at this stretch as well, having finished second solo in 2020 and having a respectable T-25 last year. In those two events, he was first in SG: Off-the-Tee and second in SG: Total, Tee-to-Green and Ball Stroke.

Selection: Adam Long (+3500)

JT Poston first round leader twice in last three events

JT Poston (12:55) has been a fixture at the top of the leaderboard after 18 holes over the past month. He did it first at the Travelers Championship, where he shared the lead with Rory McIlroy. This event ended in a tie for second place.

Not to be outdone, he did exactly the same thing the following week at the John Deere Classic when he shot 62 again to take the first-round lead. That week he finally won his second tour event in wire-to-wire fashion.

JT Poston’s shots gained ranks in the last twelve rounds

In total All around the green Tee To Green short game ball hit approach Off-The-Tee Putt
1 1 2 3 4 7 27 29

Last year, Poston made his tournament debut at the 3M Open T-28, where he had three rounds in the 60’s, with just one poor result ending his chances at the title.

Though he settled down with a missed cut at the Open Championship, it was a pair of 73s not to worry about too much. With his spectacular play lately, those odds are terribly tempting.

Selection: JT Poston (+4500)

Brice Garnett a long shot opportunity

Before last week, Brice Garnett (8:18am) would not have been on the radar at the 3M Open considering he just came off four missed cuts in a row. However, he recovered from a rut in his game and posted a T-16 at the Barracuda Championship, suggesting his game could take a turn.

While he hasn’t seriously challenged for the title in the previous three iterations at this tournament, he has been solid every time, going T-23, T-26, T-16 and amassing a total of 17 shots from tee to green for those events.

Garnett’s shots won ranks in twelve rounds at TPC Twin Cities

Off-The-Tee In total Tee To Green ball hit All around the green Approach
2 7 7 10 20 26

At +9000 odds, the expectation is clear that he won’t end up with the best result in the opening round. However, with his solid history surrounding this track, he could just be an incredible longshot.

Choice: Brice Garnett (+9000)
